The Direction of Thought
"As humans, we all have the same potential, unless there is some sort of retarded brain function. The wonderful human brain is the source of our strength and the source of our future, provided we utilize it in the right direction. If we use the brilliant human mind in the wrong way, it really is a disaster.”

Episode 2: The Direction of Thought
Alan
Hey there... I'm Alan. Welcome to the Stillmind Collection.
Jay
And I’m Jay. We’re really glad you could join us today.
Alan
So, today... we’re talking about something that is incredibly powerful, but... man, it is so easy to overlook. It’s the mind. And specifically, how we actually use it.
Jay
Right. And it makes me think of what the Dalai Lama shares in The Meditation of Living. He says... (Read slowly and deliberately) "As humans, we all have the same potential, unless there is some sort of retarded brain function. The wonderful human brain is the source of our strength and the source of our future, provided we utilize it in the right direction. If we use the brilliant human mind in the wrong way, it really is a disaster.”
Jay
I love that first part... that we all share the same potential. Like, the same incredible capacity to think, to grow... to just change.
Alan
Exactly! It’s not like some people are just born with their whole lives figured out, right? It’s just that we all have the same tool—this mind.
Jay
And that’s the catch, isn't it? It’s not just having the brain... it’s about where you point it.
Alan
Because, let’s be honest... the mind? It can go both ways. Very fast.
Jay
Oh, tell me about it! It can help you build this amazing life...
Alan
...or it can just trap you in stress, and overthinking, and... well, fear.
Jay
Same mind. Just a totally different direction.
Alan
And I think that’s where this teaching really hits me. It’s not about trying to become someone else...
Jay
Right! It’s about realizing... "Wait, I already have everything I need right here."
Alan
That’s true empowerment. Not waiting for something to happen or searching for an answer "out there"... but just recognizing what’s already sitting here.
Jay
And that’s where mindfulness comes in, I guess. Just... paying attention to how we’re thinking.
Alan
Yeah, like... catching yourself in the act.
Jay
Exactly! Like... okay, have you ever noticed how fast your mind can just, uh, spiral?
Alan
Oh, all the time. You start with one tiny little worry and suddenly you’re... what, ten steps ahead? Imagining the absolute worst-case scenario.
Jay
It’s wild. The mind is so powerful, but without that awareness... it just runs away with you.
Alan
I actually had that happen just the other day. I sent a text to a friend... and they didn't reply for, like, four hours.
Jay
Oh no... I know exactly where this is going.
Alan
Yeah... my mind started writing a whole novel. Like, "Did I say something wrong?" or "Are they mad at me?"
Jay
Meanwhile, they were probably just, I don't know... busy?
Alan
Exactly. And that’s when I caught it. I realized... my mind wasn't helping me. It was literally just creating stress out of thin air.
Jay
Yes! That’s the moment! That pause where you ask: "Is this thinking actually supporting me... or is it just hurting me?"
Alan
That one question... it honestly changes everything.
Jay
Because once you see it... you finally have a choice.
Alan
And that's what intentional living is, right? Choosing the direction of your own mind.
Jay
Instead of letting it just... drift... you guide it.
Alan
Like saying, "Okay... maybe there’s a simpler explanation."
Jay
Or even just... letting the thought go.
Alan
And here’s the hopeful part, Jay. No matter where someone is right now...
Alan
...your mind can be trained.
Alan
It’s not fixed. You’re not stuck with the way you think today.
Jay
You can redirect it. Again... and again.
Alan
Even in the tiny things.
Jay
Like... taking one breath before you react to an email.
Alan
Or choosing a bit of patience instead of that instant frustration.
Jay
Or even just shifting from that harsh self-criticism... to a bit of self-understanding.
Alan
Those shifts? They don’t feel like much in the moment.
Jay
But over time... they change your entire world.
Jay
Alright, I think it’s time for our daily reflection. Take a second and just ask yourself... "Am I using my mind to support my life... or am I just using it to create more worry?"
Alan
And just... gently check in. Where is your thinking leading you right now? Is it moving you toward a bit of clarity... or just more confusion?
Jay
And maybe reflect on this... How do my thoughts influence my actions... and the people I’m around every day?
Alan
And finally... let's keep it simple. What’s one small way... just one... that I can guide my mind in a better direction today?
Jay
Not something huge. Not perfect.
Alan
Just one small shift.
Jay
Because your mind is powerful...
Alan
And when you guide it with awareness...
Jay
...it becomes your absolute greatest strength.
Alan
So... take care of your mind. Do something useful today. And just notice the ripples... They’re already spreading.
Jay
This is Stillmind Collection. Calm within. Impact beyond.
Alan
We’ll see you next time.
