Episode 4: Happiness Isn’t Solo

Refresh your perspective in under 10 minutes a day. We move beyond the basics of mindfulness to give you real-world habits that cut straight through the distraction. It’s more than just a pause; it’s about training your mind to see the world with a new sense of clarity, so you can show up with more care for the things that truly matter.

Today we're talking about - Happiness Isn't Solo.
"We cannot be useful to ourselves unless we are also useful to others. Whether we like it or not, we are all connected, and it is unthinkable to be happy all by oneself. Anyone who is only concerned by his own well-being will suffer eventually. Anyone who is only concerned with the well-being of others takes care of oneself without even thinking about it. Even if we decide to remain selfish, let us be intelligently selfish — let us help others!” ~ by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Chapter 1

Episode 4: “Happiness Isn’t Solo”

Alan

Hey there... I'm Alan. Welcome back to the Stillmind Collection.

Jay

I’m Jay. Hope everyone is having a wonderful day so far. We’re really glad you could join us today.

Alan

I want to start with something simple... but, perhaps, maybe a little bit uneasy to understand.

Jay

Alright... I’m listening. What’ve you got?

Alan

What if... focusing only on your own happiness... is actually the very thing that makes you unhappy?

Jay

Hmm. Um... that feels a little backwards... but also... yeah, kind of true, isn't it?

Jay

It reminds me of what I read from His Holiness the Dalai Lama shares on the Meditation of Living: "We cannot be useful to ourselves unless we are also useful to others. Whether we like it or not, we are all connected... and it is unthinkable to be happy all by oneself. Anyone who is only concerned by his own well-being will suffer eventually. Anyone who is only concerned with the well-being of others takes care of oneself without even thinking about it. Even if we decide to remain selfish, let us be intelligently selfish — let us help others!"

Alan

...It’s amazing that he uses that term. "Intelligently selfish." In reality... our well-being just isn’t separate from other people.

Jay

So true. I mean, when the people around me are stressed, or disconnected... or just plain unhappy....it affects me, too.

Alan

Exactly! It’s like it’s in the air, which you can literally feel it.

Jay

Mm-hmm. And the opposite is also true, right? When there’s connection... real kindness... support...

Jay

You feel it. You can almost breathe easier.

Alan

So maybe happiness isn’t something we build alone.

Jay

Maybe it’s something we build... together.

Alan

I actually had a moment like this recently. I was having one of those days... you know, just stuck in my own head.

Jay

An "overthinking" kind of day?

Alan

[] I felt everything was falling apart, my chest felt heavy...and so as my breath. Um..Honestly.. I was just... 100% focused on my own problems.

Jay

Yeah... I understand what you mean, Alan.

Alan

Then later, I called a friend... just to check in. And she started sharing something she were going through in the middle of a profound storm — navigating her own courageous battle with cancer while simultaneously grieving the loss of her father.

Jay

Mm...

Alan

It was like this total reality check. I finally got out of my own bubble and realized my 'crisis' was actually pretty small in the grand scheme of things. Seeing people facing real-deal struggles and still pushing for a solution. It just puts everything in focus, you know?

Jay

Good job. That’s self-awareness.

Alan

Yeah. After the call, I realized...our stress is just...disturbing noises in our head.

Jay

Even though your own situation hadn’t changed at all?

Alan

Exactly! That’s when it clicked—helping someone else... it actually helped me too.

Jay

See, that’s the part people don't always realize. Kindness isn’t just "nice" or a moral obligation...

Alan

It’s practical.

Jay

Yeah! It actually supports your own well-being.

Alan

And I think that changes how we see things. Because kindness... it isn't a weakness...

Jay

It’s strength. Pure strength that comes within ourselves.

Alan

And honestly...it's a kind of intelligence, right?

Jay

Okay, you lost me. How so?

Alan

Well, think about it—if you know that showing up for others is what actually makes you feel grounded and at peace... then being kind is basically the smartest thing you can do for yourself. It’s what you’d call "intelligent selfishness."

Jay

I love that. So, it's not selfish in a toxic way...it's just realizing that looking out for others is how you look out for yourself.

Alan

Right, but understanding that your well-being is tied to everyone else.

Jay

And it also brings a sense of purpose.

Alan

Life starts to feel bigger than just your own worries.

Jay

Less "me"... more "we."

Alan

And interestingly... that shift also reduces stress.

Jay

Agreed. When you’re only focused on yourself, your mind can get really, really noisy.

Alan

But when you look outward... even a little...It creates more space. It gives you room to breathe.

Alan

So maybe the takeaway is simple... if you want to live well...

Jay

Don’t do it alone.

Alan

Include others.

Jay

Alright, it’s time for our daily reflection.

Alan

Please try to empty your thoughts... Try to take a deep breathe within... and reflect.

Jay

Ask yourself... “Am I only focused on my own needs... or do I also consider others?”

Alan

Just gently explore this... “What would change if I included others in my definition of happiness?”

Jay

Think about your daily interactions... “How do my actions affect the people around me?”

Alan

And maybe this shift in perspective... “If helping others also benefits me... what’s stopping me from doing it more?”

Jay

And finally... let's keep it simple. “What is one small act of kindness I can offer today?”

Alan

It doesn’t have to be big...

Jay

Just something real.

Alan

Because happiness...

Jay

Isn’t something we hold onto alone.

Alan

It grows... when we share it.

Jay

So... take care of your mind. Do something useful. And just notice the ripples. They’re already spreading.

Alan

This is Stillmind Collection. Calm within... impact beyond.

Jay

We’ll see you next time.
